ABC (DCP) fire extinguishers use dry chemical powder and are effective on Class A (solids like wood/paper), Class B (liquids like petrol/paint) and Class C (electrical) fires. CO2 extinguishers use carbon dioxide gas and are best for electrical fires and server rooms as they leave no residue. CO2 is not effective on deep Class A fires.
As per IS 2190 Indian standards:
(1) Monthly – Quick visual check for damage and gauge pressure.
(2) Annually – Full service/inspection by a trained technician.
(3) Every 5 years – Hydrostatic pressure testing.
Always keep a service record tag attached to the extinguisher.
Hydrostatic testing is a pressure test on fire extinguisher cylinders to verify structural integrity. The cylinder is filled with water and pressurized to 125–150% of normal operating pressure for at least 30 seconds. This ensures the cylinder won't fail under pressure during actual use. It is required every 5 years by Indian standards.
For offices, ABC dry chemical (DCP) fire extinguishers are most commonly mandated. A minimum of one 4kg or 6kg ABC extinguisher per floor is typically required. For server rooms, a CO2 extinguisher is additionally recommended. The exact requirement depends on floor area and applicable fire NOC regulations in your city.
ABC/DCP: 1kg, 2kg, 4kg, 6kg, 9kg, 25kg, 50kg, 75kg
CO2: 2kg, 3kg, 4.5kg, 6.5kg, 9kg
Foam: 9 litres, 50 litres
Water: 9 litres, 50 litres

A fire hydrant (wet riser) system is a fixed fire-fighting network installed in buildings. It consists of water tanks, pumps, piping, landing valves on each floor, hose reels and nozzles. It provides continuous water supply for firefighting and is mandatory in buildings above a certain height as per NBC and local fire brigade regulations.
Yes, a Fire NOC from the local fire department is mandatory for commercial buildings, factories, hospitals, malls and high-rise residential buildings in India. It requires adequate fire extinguishers, hydrant systems, fire detection systems and emergency exits as per NBC guidelines.
Barricading tape is heavier-duty, used to physically section off an area (construction sites, hazardous zones). Caution tape is lighter, used to warn the public of danger ahead (accident sites, road repairs). Both are non-adhesive polyethylene tapes. Underground warning tape is a separate product buried below ground to mark buried utility lines.
